Acclaimed by audiences and critics alike, Stephen Petronio is widely regarded as one of the leading dance-makers of his generation. New music, visual art and fashion collide in his dances producing powerfully modern landscapes for the senses. Petronio’s newest work Like Lazarus Did brings together his athletic dancers, Portland’s own Pacific Youth Choir and visual inspiration by artist Janine Antoni in a gripping evening that explores themes of death and resurrection, transformation and rebirth.

Integral to the work is the thrilling score by Son Lux (Ryan Lott). Having earned the title of “Best New Artist” by NPR’s All Things Considered, Son Lux bridges electronic experimentation, synth-pop, and old-world music in this original score.  Son Lux indirectly assisted in Like Lazurus Did’s genesis by sending Petronio a book of previously unpublished American slave songs passed down through oral tradition. The choreographer was so compelled and moved by these spiritually elevated songs that they became the inspiration for, and even the namesake of Petronio’s work. Like Lazarus Did is a line taken directly from one of these original songs.
